For many people of color they have a hands on experience and history with cannabis that hasn’t been as positive and profitable as the current legal cannabis industry. From that viewpoint it can seem like the cannabis industry is not being fair or even paying attention to the communities effected by cannabis the most. Most individuals and companies part of the legal industry aren't really paying any attention to those who were the most effected for one of two reasons. They just don't care or don't know how to give back or connect to the community they are part of.
This is exactly why cannabis inspired non-profit organization Cannabis Doing Good was created.
"Cannabis Doing Good is a platform to create opportunities for cannabis and communities to collaborate, to inspire new ways of people, planet and business engagement, and to showcase companies doing good," according to their official website. "Imagine a world where consumers, business partners, investors and community members recognize you as a leader in purpose-driven cannabis: generating impact and abundance, reinvesting in those communities most harmed and creating an industry accountable to the planet."
CDG was founded by Courtney Mathis and Kelly Perez, two women in the cannabis industry. Perez was a social worker, community organizer and policy advisor for the governor in Colorado after Amendment 64, the initiative that put cannabis legalization in Colorado on that eventually passed. After spending a lot of time working with these communities of color in Colorado she worried Amendment 64 would do more harm than good.
Since the inception of kindColorado and Cannabis Doing Good Kelly, Courtney, and their team have been working hard to connect all communities into the cannabis industry.
Their upcoming Cannabis Doing Good awards was curated to highlight cannabis brands, businesses, and entrepreneurs who are also doing good and giving back to the community. The award categories include the good neighbor award, love your planet, and the change maker award. Nominations are now closed but stay tuned to see who was nominated and who the winners are here.
