All plants, trees, fruits, and vegetables have the ability to produce oil or have their oils extracted. In many cases the oil is equally, if not more beneficial than the plant itself and the cannabis plant is no exception to that law of nature. Every part of the cannabis plant is resourceful, however the hemp and cannabis oil in the plant contain compounds and chemicals that are extremely medically beneficial. To better understand how and why these oils are so powerful it’s helpful to be knowledgeable about the extraction process.
CBD Oil Extraction
For the process of extracting, both CBD and hemp seed oil, the plant itself must first go through a cultivation process. However CBD and hemp have go through different oil extraction methods since they are two different parts of the cannabis plant.
“The ‘original’ CBD oil was created by Rick Simpson. This method requires you to soak the plant material in a solvent, such as grain alcohol. Once the material soaks, the remaining liquid is full of CBD (and other cannabinoids), you evaporate the solvent and the remaining oil is ready for consumption. The Rick Simpson method inspired larger operations to scale their extraction for commercial demand,” according to an article by Herb.co.
Now there are many other ways that CBD oil can be extracted for various uses. For medical purposes whole plant extraction is a popular method. This is when the CBD is taken out of the entire plant in order for as many cannabinoids as possible to be pulled from the oil during this extraction process. Cannabinoids are essentially what attach to the body's endocannabinoid system in order to receive the full benefits of cannabis.
To create CBD oil crumble, wax, isolate, or butter, most often used for consumption by smoking it or vaporizing it, CO2 extraction is the go to method. CO2 extraction is typically done for commercial use in order to produce a large amount of product. It requires a lot more attention and several tools, including temperature control and pressure chambers.
“This supercritical property of CO2 is great for chemical extraction because it is gentler than other compounds and won’t cause damage or denaturing (making unfit for consumption). And because the solubility in CO2 varies with pressure, supercritical CO2 can be used to extract selected compounds (rather than a combination of all compounds) with just a few small adjustments,” according to Honest Marijuana.
CO2 extraction actually provides the cleanest, safest, and tastier form of CBD oil. Of course CBD oil can also be pressed or pulled from the cannabis plant in the most traditional form. This is not a super popular method because very little product comes out and it is not the best tasting, but it is still very high in cannabinoids. CBD oil can also be extracted from hemp, making it 100% non-psychoactive legal CBD in all 50 states.

Hemp Oil Extraction
The process and method of extracting hemp oil from the cannabis plant is much simpler compared to CBD oil. Hemp oil can be also be extracted with the CO2 method and Rick Simpson method, but they are not preferred for most distributors and consumers. Cold pressed or olive oil extraction are the preferred method of extraction for hemp.
“Cold pressing is a good technique for obtaining hemp seed oil, but it’s not useful for CBD oil production, as CBD oil is obtained from the plant’s seeds and stalks. This oil is obtained by simply pressing or grinding the seeds at a temperature that’s lower than 120°F, and it retains its nutritional value and flavor. Ethanol and olive oil can be used for extracting the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant, and they have the advantage of being safe for consumption as well. On the other hand, ethanol also extracts chlorophyll, so the final product has an unpleasant taste and a not-so-tempting green color,” according to Elixinol CBD.
Hemp oil does not have as many medical benefits as CBD oil, since it carries less cannabinoids, but it does some and have several other effective uses and benefits.
“Hemp seed oil is rich in nutrients and is a good addition to any diet, but only contains very small amounts of cannabinoids, as it is made from just the seeds of the plant. Hemp seed oil can certainly be added to CBD supplements as a base for these products,” also according to Elixinol CBD.
The hemp seed oil is also super beneficial when it is ingested. A drop or capsule of hemp seed oil can help lower the risk of a heart attack, balance hormones, reduce pain, increase levels of fiber and protein, and promote healthy hair and skin.
